Year 5 Science - Solar System

Image
Year 5 Science  During science lessons this half term, we have been learning about the solar system, including the moon. We learned lots of facts about the moon including how it doesn't  actually  change size, but goes through different phases. These phases all have tricky names to learn like waning crescent, waxing gibbous or waxing quarter (which is actually a half!). We looked at how the phases of the moon could be represented with Oreos and some keen members of our class had a snack and recreated them at home!

Year 5 science - What is dissolving? As part of our topic about reversible and irreversible changes, we looked at which substances would dissolve into liquids and which would not. We learned that anything which  can  be dissolved is  soluble.  We were testing salt, sugar, gravy granules and polo mints. Which ones do you think dissolved? At the end of our experiment, we thought about what we could change for next time, that might affect the dissolving, including temperature, stirring and controlling more carefully the amounts. Everyone had fun with it - even if we also discovered who doesn't like gravy!

Christmas Craft

As part of our Christmas Craft morning, the children did a variety of activities, including Christmas tree weaving, crafts and making white chocolate snowmen. We were linking the last activity with our science, changing states.

National School Sports Week

To celebrate National School Sports week, the Year 5 class have had lots of opportunity to take part in a range of physical activities. These included cricket, delivered by an East Devon cricket coach, swimming twice at Topsham swimming pool - including water safety - as well as competing in Sports Day. Such a busy week of sport but a great way to display the learning powers and school values!
